Description

The term “Chardham” refers to a sacred pilgrimage circuit in Hinduism, primarily located in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It encompasses four major religious sites that hold immense significance for Hindus. These sites are:

  1. Yamunotri: The source of the Yamuna River, located in the Garhwal Himalayas. Pilgrims undertake a trek to reach the Yamunotri temple, which is dedicated to the goddess Yamuna.
  2. Gangotri: This is where the holy river Ganga originates from the Gangotri Glacier. The Gangotri temple is dedicated to the goddess Ganga, and it’s an important pilgrimage destination.
  3. Kedarnath: Situated in the Rudraprayag district, Kedarnath is home to one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, a revered form of Lord Shiva. Pilgrims have to undertake a challenging trek to reach Kedarnath.
  4. Badrinath: Located on the banks of the Alaknanda River, Badrinath is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams, which are holy shrines for Vaishnavites.

A complete pilgrimage to the Chardham is traditionally started from the west and continued clockwise, beginning with Yamunotri, then proceeding to Gangotri, followed by Kedarnath, and concluding in Badrinath.

The Chardham Yatra is considered highly auspicious among Hindus and is believed to wash away one’s sins. It is undertaken by millions of devotees every year, especially during the months of April to November when the weather is favorable for travel. The rugged terrain and high altitudes of these pilgrimage sites make the journey both spiritually and physically challenging, but the devotion and breathtaking natural beauty draw pilgrims from across India and the world.
